How does one create privacy in the “backyard” when the deck and the sliding door is the only entrance you see when you drive in? The front door is at the back of the house!
Oh and by the way, can you build a patio where no one will see it?
What a wonderful design project this was! Upon determining that there was only 6 feet from the edge of the driveway to the deck, plant material had to be chosen for its overall growth width and for its screening capabilities all year long. Flowers and birds were important to the client so Serviceberry and lilacs became part of the beds that defined a private space.
The patio came with its own challenge as the existing stonewall under the deck had no proper drainage and water, already seeping into the basement, was going to erode the patio space. The existing wall was taken down without having to remove the deck footings and rebuilt. The new stairs and retaining wall around the patio now pitched so water would drain away from the house.
The client’s perennials that had been moved while construction was underway were replanted and smile at us even today for a job well done.
