Cape Neddick Estate

This ocean front property with breath-taking views sat for over 10 years without having the landscape addressed and it showed. When we first arrived on site the Sumac and brambles had taken over the property border and were marching towards the house. There was no definition to the yard, sight lines to the ocean were obscured and the lawn was in drastic need of renovation. The property is within the 75 foot set back from high water mark so there was a tremendous amount of care needed to protect the natural resources. This meant complete collaboration with the DEP and the local code enforcement agency.

The first priority on this project was to retrieve the area lost to the overgrown shrubbery. Careful pruning and replacement of invasive species with hardy native plant material was done. Stone work then created defined spaces for walkways, the front entrance and the driveway. It was with the stonework, both in the form of stonewall, pillars, bluestone path ways and cobble accents that created these unique areas. The addition of large plant material, such as the 22’ tall Dawn Redwood and the 24’ tall clump Red Maple, gave the landscape a feeling of maturity and stability. Lawn renovation was ensured with a new irrigation system and sod.

In the end, we enhanced the natural beauty of the ledge outcrops and the planting with an extensive low voltage lighting system. This system, like all landscape lighting, provides safety and the use of different areas well into the night.
